St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting the death of a child from flu-related complications.

The death was reported to the department last week and was the state’s first pediatric flu-related death since the start of the current flu season. The Health Department’s regular updates on flu activity do not track flu-related deaths involving adults, which are not uncommon, but a recently published obituary blamed the death of a Claremont man last weekend on flu-related complications.

The weekly flu activity update continues to rate it was “widespread” in Minnesota where just over 500 flu-related hospitalizations were reported last week. The Department of Health received 23 reports of confirmed flu outbreaks in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and 4 reports of probable outbreaks in schools.
