Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Mayo Clinic is celebrating another number one ranking.

The Rochester-based healthcare giant today announced it has received the Vizient 2017 Bernard A. Birnbaum, M.D. Quality Leadership award. It honors Mayo as the top hospital among academic medical centers and community hospitals throughout the nation for delivering safe, timely, effective, and equitable patient-centered care.

A news release indicates Mayo’s Rochester campus was ranked number one among 107 academic medical centers. The Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing received the top ranking among 161 community hospitals.

“We’re honored that two Mayo Clinic hospitals received the 2017 Quality Leadership Award,” says Paula Santrach, M.D., chief quality officer, Mayo Clinic. “The unique Mayo experience is the dedication to quality, safety and service that our staff displays each day. Their hard work and firm commitment to excellence will make us even better in the future.”

The results of a study concerning quality and accountability were used to rank the healthcare providers. The study was guided by six areas of care identified by the Institute of Medicine. Those areas are: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and being patient-centered.
