Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Mayo Memorial was returned to its original site behind the Mayo Civic Center Monday morning.

The memorial that consists of Doctors Will and Charlie Mayo was removed last year when work began on the civic center expansion project.

The bronze sculpture then underwent a detailed restoration that included the application of a wax coating to protect it against the elements.

The memorial was  installed in the open-air, semi-circle amphitheater behind the civic center in 1950. The sculptor intended the amphitheater to be symbolic of the operating rooms where the Mayo brothers worked.

The memorial was moved to the front of the civic center in 1986. There had been plans to relocate the statue inside the entrance to the expanded Mayo Civic Center but Mayor Ardell Brede earlier this year proposed it be placed back in its original location.

A time capsule was found under the memorial when it was removed last year. It contained hundreds of items, including newspapers and clippings, Mayo Clinic booklets, documents and paperwork, a book about the Mayo brothers, postcards and even some Christmas cards.
