MANKATO, MN (KROC AM News) - A standout student-athlete at Minnesota State University Mankato has been killed in a traffic accident.

The Minnesota State Patrol says 22-year-old Jeffrey Decock was driving on a rural section of Highway 14 near Lamberton Tuesday when he crashed into a farm tractor that turned in front of him. Decock died at the scene.

He was a track and field standout at Minnesota State. In fact, he was a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion in the high jump.

The school’s Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman released the following statement on Wednesday:

"We are profoundly saddened by Jeff's sudden passing. He was an outstanding student-athlete and made a positive impact on our program and those around him. We offer our condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Jeff's family, friends, teammates and coaches."
