Man Sentenced for Gun Battle With La Crescent Police
La Crescent, MN (KROC-AM News) - One of the men involved in a gun battle with two La Crescent police officers last summer has been sentenced to prison.
20-year-old William Wallraff, who has a Kellogg address but had been living in Holmen Wisconsin, recently pleaded guilty to first and second-degree assault charges and was given consecutive sentences that total 13 years in prison. 13 other felony charges, including multiple counts of attempted murder, were dismissed through the plea agreement worked out with prosecutors in Houston County.
Wallraff was with 19-year-old Wyatt Helfrich, who is accused of firing a shotgun at La Crescent Police Officer Ryan Quanrud as he was approaching a vehicle he had stopped for speeding in the early morning hours of July 31st. Office Granrude and his partner responded by returning to their squad car and exchanging gunfire with the occupants of the vehicle.
The investigative reports on the incident say Helfrich then sped away and additional shots were fired out of his vehicle at the pursuing officers before the chase finally ended near Caledonia and the two men were placed under arrest.
Helfrich recently lost his bid to have the charges against him dismissed and entered not guilty pleas to all 15 felony charges. He remains in the Houston County jail on $1-million bail and is currently scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in June.
