Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - First responders in Red Wing arrived seconds too late Tuesday to save an elderly man who got into trouble while hiking on what’s known as Barn Bluff.

The Red Wing Fire Department says an emergency call was made around 12:45 p.m. about a hiker who had fallen and was stranded on a steep incline on the north side of the bluff.  Seconds after several first responders arrived, they saw the man fall again, all the way to the bottom of the bluff.  Efforts to revive the person were unsuccessful  He was later identified as  81-year-old Frank Gritters, of Pella, Iowa. Police say he  had been hiking with his wife.

That section of the popular hiking bluff was closed by police two years ago because of its dangerous conditions. A woman escaped injuries after she fell while on the trail earlier this month.
