Iowa City, IA ( Learfield Wire Services) - The Minnesota Gophers football team pushed Iowa to the brink, but couldn't put the unbeaten Hawkeyes away in a 40-35 loss Saturday.

Iowa had leads of 27-14 and 33-21, but wasn't able to breathe easy while running its record to 10-0, the best start in school history.

Shannon Brooks carried the ball 14 times for 86 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Mitch Leidner threw for one score and passed for another.

Every time the Gophers got close, they were knocked back by running back LeShun Daniels and quarterback C.J. Beathard.  Daniels rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Beathard passed for 213 yards and scored two TDs himself on the ground.

The win allowed Iowa to take possession of Floyd of Rosedale.  The Gophers won the trophy last year.

If the Gophers are to finish 6-6 and qualify for a bowl, they will have to beat Illinois next Saturday and Wisconsin the week after that.
