Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester School Board has voted to proceed with a major expansion of Hoover Elementary School.

The 35,000 square foot addition will essentially double the size of the existing school along Elton Hills Drive to allow the school district to further consolidate pre-Kindergarten programs while also providing some additional space for Hoover’s Kindergarten students.

The estimated $8 million dollar project is scheduled to get underway in the early fall and be completed in August of next year. The price tag matches the budget the school district for a previous plan to purchase and renovate the former Minnesota School of Business campus in northwest Rochester. The school board recently backed out of a purchase agreement for the property because estimates for the cost of the needed renovations were too high.
About half of the district’s pre-K classrooms at currently located at the former Burr Oak Elementary School, which has been renamed the Mighty Oaks Early Learning School. The other early education classrooms are at elementary school sites scattered throughout the school district.
