Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester School District is hoping former students who attended classes at Golden Hill Elementary will help solve a mystery.

Superintendent Michael Munoz says the former school is about to be sold and demolished to make way for a retail center. It’s a deal that has been in the making for about two years, and Munoz says the upcoming removal of an underground fuel tank by the school district is expected to clear the way for the closing on the sale to the Ryan Companies.

After hearing from some former students wishing for a final visit to their old school, the school district decided to open up the Golden Hill building for tours on Friday from 5 until 7 p.m.

Munoz says he plans to speak with the former students and quiz them about some underground treasure. He says there are apparently two barrels containing time capsules buried somewhere on the school grounds and he’s hoping the former Golden Hill students will have information that could help school officials recover them. Munoz says one of time capsules is thought to be encased in concrete under the flag pole.
