( gophersports.com ) - The University of Minnesota baseball team got its first win of the season, winning 3-1 at Florida Gulf Coast.

Matt Halloran drove in all three Golden Gophers runs and three Minnesota (1-7) pitchers combined to hold the Eagles (5-5-1) to one run on eight hits. The Gophers recorded four hits, and each team made one error.

Halloran hit a bases-clearing single in the seventh to put Minnesota ahead 3-0. There were two outs, and the bases were loaded by singles from Matt Fiedler and Michael Handel and a walk by Tony Skjefte. Halloran drove the ball to right field, where Colton Bottomley had to make a long run and dive just to get a glove on it.

Minnesota starter Ben Meyer went five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out five. Jordan Jess (1-0) got the win, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Brian Glowicki struck out three and allowed a run in the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the save. Eagles starter Mike Murray (1-2) pitched eight innings, allowing four hits and a walk and striking out four.

Handel hit 2-for-4 with a run. Jake Noll hit 2-for-5 and Adam Eggnatz 2-for-4 for FGCU. The Eagles scored their only run in the eighth Bottomley led off with a double and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder to second.
