Hagedorn Defeats Rochester’s Carla Nelson in GOP 1st District Race

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Republican candidate Jim Hagedorn has won a primary for another shot at a southern Minnesota swing congressional seat.

Hagedorn's victory Tuesday comes two years after he narrowly lost the 1st District race to Democratic Rep. Tim Walz. The seat opened up with Walz's run for governor.

Hagedorn defeated GOP state Sen. Carla Nelson in a race marked by both candidates touting strong support of President Donald Trump's agenda.

Walz represented the district for six terms but the district is generally considered slightly Republican.

Hagedorn will face Iraq war veteran Dan Feehan of Mankato, who easily won the Democratic primary to advance to the November election.
