MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Justin Kloos scored his fourth shorthanded goal of the season - in a five-goal second period as the Gopher Hockey program came up just short of a Big Ten sweep on Saturday in a 5-3 loss to Penn State at Mariucci Arena.

Penn State (17-8-3, 7-5-0-0) jumped out to a two-goal lead on Saturday afternoon behind goals from Matt Mendelson and David Glen, but the Gophers rallied from the deficit with a pair of back-to-back goals of their own. Jake Bischoff picked up his fifth overall goal – and fourth power-play goal – at 8:11 of the second period off a setup from Tyler Sheehy and Vinni Lettieri before Sheehy added a goal of his own – his 10th of the year – at 9:49. Sheehy’s goal, which gave the rookie his sixth point in the last five games, was set up by Kloos and Taylor Cammarata.

After Luke Juha reclaimed the lead for Penn State, Kloos picked up the equalizer with a short-handed tally and his 12th overall goal of the season at 19:20 with assists from Hudson Fasching and Michael Brodzinski. The junior captain has now scored a point in nine-straight games, a new career high for the forward, while he also has goals in eight of the last nine games. With four shorthanded goals on the season, Kloos is now one off the school single-season record shared by Peter Hankinson (1989-90) and Steve Griffith (1982-82).

The Nittany Lions scored twice in the third period to lock up the series split with Zach Saar picking up the game-winning goal and Kenny Brooks scoring an empty-net tally.

In goal, Eric Schierhorn made 24 saves for the Maroon & Gold to move to 14-13-0 on the season. The rookie netminder has started all 27 games for Minnesota this season.
