Gophers Fire Longtime Wrestling Coach

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota has fired longtime wrestling coach J Robinson after allegations that he helped cover up his wrestlers' sale and use of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

The school announced the firing on Wednesday. Robinson has coached the Gophers for 30 years and led the team to three national championships.

But this spring several wrestlers were investigated by the school and police over their alleged use and sale of Xanax. Police declined to file charges citing a lack of evidence.

Robinson's attorney has said the coach did inform his superiors in the athletic department.

Assistant coach Brandon Eggum has been named interim head coach for the upcoming season.
