Minneapolis, MN (Gophersports.com) - Emmit Carpenter was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance at Penn State last Saturday.

Carpenter went a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts at Penn State and connected from 35, 37, 37 and 46 yards.

The sophomore continues to put his name in the Gopher history books, as he became just the fifth Gopher ever to make four or more field goals on the road. Adam Bailey made five field goals at Penn State in 1997, while Brent Berglund made four at Purdue in 1990. Jim Gallery made four field goals on the road in consecutive weeks at Indiana and Iowa in 1981.

Carpenter’s kicks at Penn State came in pressure situations as well. His second field goal of the game was a 35-yarder and came with one second left in the first half. He then drilled a 37-yard attempt with 54 seconds remaining in the game and hit a career long 46-yarder in overtime.

Carpenter never attempted a field goal before this season and now he is a perfect 9-for-9 (one of only three Big Ten kickers who is perfect this year). The nine consecutive field goals ranks tied for fifth in school history with Bailey, who made nine straight in 1996. Dan Nystrom holds the top three spots in the category with consecutive makes of 16 (2002), 14 (2000) and 13 (2000). Carpenter would tie Chip Lohmiller (10 straight in 1985) if he makes his next field goal.

The sophomore has not had many chip shots either, as his shortest kick is 28 yards. His other eight field goals have been 35 yards or greater and five of his field goals have been 42 yards or greater. Six of his field goals have come at the end of a half, game or in overtime.

Earlier this season Carpenter became the first Gopher to make three field goals more than 40 yards in a game when he did so against Indiana State.

Carpenter is the first Gopher to be honored by the Big Ten this season and is the first Gopher to win Special Teams Player of the Week since Ryan Santoso won the honor on Oct. 20, 2014.
