KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Gibson bounced back for a rocky start to shut down Kansas City, and the Minnesota Twins held on through a shaky ninth to beat James Shields and the Royals 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Gibson (9-8) allowed only a single by Alcides Escobar in the third inning and another by Nori Aoki in the sixth over seven dazzling innings. He was at his best toward the end, too, setting down the Royals in order in the seventh on four seemingly effortless pitches.

Casey Fien worked the eighth before Glen Perkins ran into trouble in the ninth, giving up a leadoff double to Omar Infante and an RBI single to Eric Hosmer. Perkins bounced back to get three straight pop outs and record his 26th save of the season.

Josh Willingham hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Brian Dozier provided a run-scoring single in the fifth off Shields (9-6).

Twins' Arcia stays behinds after birth of child

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Twins were playing short-handed Tuesday night against the Royals while outfielder Oswaldo Arcia spent time with his family following the birth of his baby boy.

Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said Arcia declined to take paternity leave. He planned to spend the day with his boy before catching a flight to Kansas City for Wednesday's game.

In other news, Antony said that catcher Joe Mauer swung in the batting cages and did a series of drills while recovering from a strained right oblique. Mauer plans to hit live batting practice in the cage on Wednesday before the Twins decide on his next step.

Right-hander Ricky Nolasco, recovering from a sore elbow, also came out of a bullpen session feeling good. He plans to throw another one Thursday.

'Out of nowhere': Twins add undrafted 24-year-old

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In one of their craziest scouting experiences, the Minnesota Twins have reached a deal with a 24-year-old pitcher who has thrown 100 mile per hour fastballs in a California summer league but has never been drafted.

The Twins plan to send Brandon Poulson to their rookie league club in Elizabethton, Tennessee. He was cleared to play on Tuesday.

Poulson pitched this summer for the Healdsburg Prune Packers in the collegiate Sacramento Rural League. He played last season for the Academy of Art University in San Francisco after taking off a couple of years to work in his father's excavating business.

The 6-foot-6 Poulson previously played baseball and football at Santa Rosa Junior College but was never drafted. His manager this summer was the brother of major leaguer Jonny Gomes.

Sean Johnson is the Twins' scouting supervisor for the West Coast and says "this kid came out of nowhere."
