Authorities in Costa Rica are investigating the murder of a former Stewartville woman.

An Associated Press report says 45-year-old Sondra Elizondo was found dead from stab wounds on a bed in a San Jose hotel room on Wednesday.

She was a graduate of the University of St. Thomas, which posted a news release about her death. It says Elizondo was the director and co-founder of Vida Volunteer, which is described as an organization that sets up mobile medical, dental and veterinary clinics in Latin America. Last year, Elizondo was presented with the University of St. Thomas Humanitarian Award.

The 1988 graduate of Stewartville High School most recently lived in Florida. She is survived by her husband, 2 children, along with a brother and her parents.
