Red Wing, MN (KROC AM News)  A large fire broke out Wednesday night at the solid waste campus in Red Wing.

The fire was reported around 7:45 p.m.

Red Wing firefighters found heavy smoke and a large fire in the tipping area. The fire continued to spread and eventually covered nearly half of the 36,000 square foot building. The fire was brought under control three hours later and crews remained at the scene until around 2 a.m.

The fire department says the building sustained major damage. The cause is under investigation.

A total of 70 firefighters from Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Ellsworth, Lake City and Goodhue were involved in battling the fire.
