Falcon Heights, MN(KROC AM News) - The 2017 Minnesota State Fair is officially underway.

The gates opened early Thursday and the first person to stroll through was Brian Motiaytis, who arrived around 1:30 a.m. This is becoming a tradition for Motiaytis.  He has now been the first person to enter the state fairgrounds three consecutive years and four of the last five. The fair runs through Labor Day.

Wednesday night, a 19-year-old college student from St. Peter was crowned the Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

Emily Annexstad, who represented Nicollet County, will serve as the official goodwill ambassador for more than 3,000 Minnesota dairy farm families.  She’s a U of M student.

Her first official duty as the 64th Princess Kay will be sitting in a large, rotating cooler as she has her likeness sculpted in a 90-pound block of butter. This could take six hours.  This year marks the 46th year that butter sculptor Linda Christensen has performed the tradition that includes the new princess and the other finalists
