DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Authorities suspect drinking and speeding in a snowmobile crash on a northeastern Minnesota lake that killed the driver and seriously injured his rider.

The St. Louis County sheriff's office says 20-year-old Chase DeDominces  of Duluth died Monday. He suffered head injuries in the crash shortly after 9:30 p.m. March 13th on Pequaywan  Lake, northwest of Two Harbors.

The sheriff's office says his rider, 19-year-old Travis Wigstrom, also of Duluth, was hospitalized with serious head injuries.

Authorities say DeDominces was driving the snowmobile at a "high speed" when it struck an island in the lake, throwing both men off the machine.

The Star Tribune reports DeDominces was a 2013 graduate of Duluth East High School and was attending the University of Minnesota Duluth.
