WINONA, Minn. (AP) — Police say a dock worker has died after falling into an empty barge in Winona in southeastern Minnesota.

Winona deputy police chief Tom Williams says the worker for CD Corporation was moving the cover on the docked barge Thursday when he fell 12 to 15 feet into it. The Winona Daily News reports the man had a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. Winona police said in a news release that an initial investigation found the man was working at the top of the barge, and fell after a hatch shifted unexpectedly.

He was identified Friday as 24-year-old Brent Allen Burt of Winona.
