ST PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says a Lino Lakes police officer shot and killed a driver after a traffic stop.

According to the agency, the officer stopped a vehicle speeding on Interstate 694 and tried to make an arrest for outstanding warrants and on suspicion of intoxicated driving.

The agency says the two struggled, the driver got back into the car and then drove off, dragging the officer.

The officer shot the driver, but the vehicle continued on. The officer fell onto the interstate and the vehicle ended up going through a fence and stopping in a grocery store parking lot.

The officer was treated and released from a local hospital. The driver died at the scene.

The agency's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
