MORA, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a Kanabec (kah-NAY'-bek) County deputy shot and killed a man who was punching her in the head outside a home in Mora.

Sheriff Brian Smith says it happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday when the deputy responded to a call from a woman who said a man was on his way over to harm her. When the man drove up, he says, the deputy ordered him to stop, but he continued advancing and attacked the deputy. He says the deputy then shot the suspect.

The suspect died at the scene. The deputy was slightly injured and was treated at the scene.

Smith says investigators are still trying to figure out why it all happened. He did not say whether the suspect was armed. The deputy is on standard administrative leave.

Names of the deputy and suspect have not been released.
