St Paul, MN (KROC AM News)  - Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has asked for a federal investigation into the latest deadly police-related shooting in the Twin Cities. Police in the St Paul suburb of Falcon Heights have released very little information on the incident yet, but a woman who was there at the time of the Wednesday shooting says it was not justified.

A man identified as 32-year-old Philando Castile was shot and killed while in a car that had been pulled over for a routine traffic stop around 9 p.m. Castille’s girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and her young daughter were in the car when Castile was shot.

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul after word got out about the shooting. Dayton later released a statement, saying he had talked with White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and asked for an immediate investigation by the Justice Department. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting its own investigation.

Dayton’s staff says he and Lt. Governor Smith joined the crowd assembled Thursday morning outside the residence.

Dayton also added these comments:

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community of Philando Castile. Our state today grieves with them. I will do everything in my power to help protect the integrity of that investigation, to ensure a proper and just outcome for all involved.”

Here's a link to the audio of his complete comments on this most-recent shooting.

The shooting comes just over a month after federal prosecutors announced no charges would be filed in the publicized police-related shooting of Jamar Clark. He was shot and killed last November while involved in a confrontation with two white police officers in Minneapolis.
