Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester police have made an arrest in connection to a burglary and vandalism case that created a dangerous situation in a southwest neighborhood last Friday.  And the suspect is a convicted killer.

Arrested Monday was 46-year-old Mark Huyber of Rochester.

A police investigator identified Huyber as the person seen on surveillance video buying some sugar at a convenience store near the targeted home. He admitted pouring the sugar into the gas tank of a vehicle parked in the garage of a home in the 200 block of 18th St SW. That was the same home that was filled with natural gas when a woman returned Friday evening. It was discovered the supply line to the furnace had been cut. Huyber denied cutting the line. He is expected to face a burglary charge but the investigation continues. Police say the woman is Huyber's ex-girlfriend.

Huyber was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2000 after pleading guilty to a 2nd-degree murder charge in connection with the 1999 shooting of a Detroit man.

He was given a stayed prison sentence in 2014 for threatening an ex-girlfriend. He was involved in another domestic incident with the woman in 2016 and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. It’s not known if the woman in this new case is the same victim.

Police say Huyber was arrested Monday at his place of employment. He tried to flee as he was being taken into custody but was tackled by a foreman at the site of the new city parking ramp being built in the downtown.
