Thirty-year-old Robert James Schueller had pleaded guilty to federal charges in March. Schueller had an affair with a woman in 2013 while he was married. The woman ended the affair and started a relationship with another man. When he couldn't win her back, he asked a co-worker to help him hire a hit man.

He gave that co-worker $10,000 to deliver to the hit man in Wisconsin in March 2014. The co-worker returned the money to Schueller and later told investigators he never wanted to play a role in a murder.
