Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Fire Department says a woman and her baby narrowly escaped injury when a car crashed into their apartment Monday evening.

Deputy Chief Steve Belau says the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when another resident of the apartment complex at 2106 Valleyhigh Drive Northwest pulled into a parking space, and instead of braking, accelerated into the building. Belau says the vehicle careened into the apartment and plowed into the living room while the residents were in the kitchen preparing dinner. No injuries were reported.

The Fire Department news release says the driver of the car was seen being placed under arrest for suspicion of driving while impaired.

The apartment unit hit by the car is not usable at this time, but the Rochester Fire Department collapse rescue team installed shoring materials to prevent further damage to the unit above the damaged residence, allowing the occupants to remain in their homes.

The extent of the damage to the building was still be assessed Monday night.
