WINONA, Minn. (AP) — Police say a motorist who struck a 4-year-old boy who had dashed into the street was beaten by bystanders in Winona.

The child and the driver were taken to a Winona hospital to be treated for their injuries Monday.

Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams tells KAGE that when the man got out of his vehicle to check on the child, as many as ten bystanders near the scene of the accident started kicking and punching him. Authorities didn't release the condition of the boy.

Williams says the 18-year-old driver sustained scrapes, contusions and a chipped tooth.
