ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Republicans are moving to restrict transgender residents' use of bathrooms and locker rooms.

GOP lawmakers unveiled a bill Wednesday that would force transgender people to use bathrooms that match their sex at birth. The law would apply bathrooms, locker rooms and changing rooms. It also bans employers from allowing transgender people to use facilities of their identified gender.

Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen says his bill is motivated by ensuring privacy and safety of residents worried about members of the opposite sex. But it faces stiff resistance from Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton, who promised to veto it in the unlikely event it reaches his desk.

Dayton says it's appalling and calls it a political maneuver to appease conservative voters.

A similar bill stalled at the Capitol last year.
