MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Gopher Hockey freshman forward Tyler Sheehy has been tabbed the Big Ten First Star of the Week after helping Minnesota to a sweep of Ohio State last weekend in the first series of Big Ten play.

A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy totaled four points (three goals, one assist) on the weekend as the Maroon & Gold tallied a pair of overtime wins over the Buckeyes. The conference accolade marks Sheehy’s first Big Ten weekly award.

In Friday’s 3-2 overtime win, he scored his sixth goal of the year to spark a two-goal Minnesota rally in the third period that forced overtime, marking the first time since March 16, 2013 that the Gophers have rallied from a third-period deficit to win.

Sheehy followed up the performance with his first career three-point game and first career two-goal game as the Gophers closed the series with a 5-4 overtime win at Mariucci Arena.

The forward now has four multi-point performances (3-1-0) in 13 games this season and has seven points (five goals, two assists) in the last five games. Sheehy leads Minnesota’s freshman class and ranks tied for second overall on the Gophers roster with 11 points (six goals, five assists) this season.

Michigan’s Justin Selman was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week while Wisconsin’s Ryan Wagner was named Big Ten Third Star of the Week.

The Gophers close out the first half of the season this weekend with a two-game Big Ten series at Michigan.
