St Paul (KROC AM News) - The family of a Rochester woman who died after eating a bad apple is seeking damages from the companies involved in the case.

According to the St Paul Pioneer Press, a lawsuit has been filed in Ramsey County Court by Rochelle Kozera.

Her mother Beatrice Stewart died in 2014 just days after buying a caramel apple at a Kwik Trip store. It was later determined the 83-year-old died from listeria monocytogenes sepsis.

The lawsuit says the 2014 outbreak had affected 35 people from 12 states within a few months and seven of the victims died. One other Minnesotan also died.

A federal investigation traced the source of the outbreak to a California apple grower. That company, Kwik Trip and three other firms involved in the processing, distribution and sale of the tainted apple are named in the lawsuit.

So how can apples become contaminated?  Here's some info.
