21 gold medals for Phelps...Ledecky wins second gold of 2016 Games...Serena Williams ousted

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — American swimmers continue to mine for gold in the swimming pool at the Rio Olympics.

Michael Phelps has made up for one of the few losses in his Olympic career. Phelps avenged his defeat at the 2012 London Games by winning the 200-meter butterfly last night, holding off Japan's Masato Sakai by a mere four-hundredths of a second. Then Phelps won his 21st career gold medal as part of the winning four-by-200 relay team. Phelps now has 25 medals in all, and three more races in Rio to add to his almost unimaginable total.

Katie Ledecky of the United States has captured her second gold medal, winning the 200-meter freestyle. Sarah Sjostrom (SHOO'-struhm) of Sweden claims the silver and Emma McKeon of Australia takes the bronze. Earlier, Ledecky had won the 400-meter freestyle.

In other Olympic highlights:

— The US women's gymnastics team has defended its title with a gold medal win at the Rio Olympics.

Led by three-time world champ Simone Biles, the Americans blew past the competition. They finished more than eight points in front of runner-up Russia.

Biles was joined by Aly Raisman (AL'-ee RAYS'-mihn), Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian (KOH'-shun).

China won the bronze, 68-hundredths of a second back of Russia.

— With time running out in women's soccer, Catalina Usme beat Hope Solo with a free kick from a tight angle to give Colombia a 2-2 draw against the United States at the Olympics. Teenager Mallory Pugh became the youngest player to score for the United States in an Olympics with her goal in the 59th minute.

Despite the draw, the top-ranked United States still finished atop Group F.

— In equestrian, Phillip Dutton of the U.S. has won the bronze in individual event. The winner of the gold was defending champion Michael Jung of Germany.

— The U.S. beat Spain 11-4 in women's water polo, while in men's rugby, the U.S. fell to Argentina 17-14.

— The U.S. men's volleyball team has dropped to 0-2 after a 3-1 loss to Italy. The Americans next play host Brazil Thursday night.

— In the Olympic tennis tournament, Serena Williams is out. Committing five double faults in one game, Williams lost to Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-4, 6-3 in the third round in a real shocker Tuesday, ending the No. 1-seeded American's bid to become the first tennis player to collect a pair of singles golds.

In other tennis, defending Olympic champ Andy Murray advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Argentina's Juan Monaco.

Also winning were 2008 gold medalist Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-EHL'l nah-DAHL') and No. 12 Steve Johnson of the U.S.

For the women, seventh-seed Madison Keys of the U.S. moved on to the fourth round.

Tribe edges Nats...Dodgers tied for first...Eight straight for Cubs

UNDATED (AP)— In a battle of division leaders, the Cleveland Indians didn't get a hit off Washington's Max Scherzer until the seventh inning -- but then made the most of the five hits they earned. The AL Central-leading Indians beat the NL East-leading Nationals 3-1.

Francisco Lindor singled to break up Scherzer's no-hit bid and scored in the seventh inning. Jose Ramirez went 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the seventh and an RBI single in the ninth. Lonnie Chisenhall drove in Ramirez in the seventh while Cleveland solved Scherzer, who fell to 12-7 despite allowing just three hits.

Trevor Bauer kept the Nationals at bay to improve to 8-5. The Indians increased their lead in the AL Central to three games over Detroit.

In other baseball:

— The L.A. Dodgers are tied for first place in the NL West by a half game over San Francisco. The Giants were alone in first place since May 15. The Dodgers routed Philadelphia 9-3. Howie Kendrick, Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH'-nee grahn-DAHL') and Justin Turner homered to help the Dodgers win their fourth in a row.

— Tom Koehler pitched seven innings to help the Miami Marlins to a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

— Zack Greinke (GREHN'-kee) won in his return from a six-week stay on the disabled list, Michael Bourn hit a go-ahead triple in the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied past the New York Mets 5-3. Greinke is 11-3 after his eighth straight victory.

__ Make it eight straight victories for the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. Kris Bryant hit his 28th home run, John Lackey outpitched former teammate Jered Weaver, and the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1. Willson Contreras also homered. Ben Zobrist added an RBI double for the major league-leading Cubs, who won their 70th game and moved a season-high 29 over .500.

— The Boston Red Sox trimmed the Yankees 5-3. The Red Sox have won 10 of the last 14 meetings between these rivals. Rick Porcello went eight strong innings to improve to 15-3 overall -- he's 11-0 in 12 starts at Fenway Park.

— Last-place Tampa Bay outscored Toronto 9-2 behind a 15-hit attack. Drew Smyly pitched six innings to win his second straight decision to improve to 4-11. Logan Forsythe hit a solo homer.

— The AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles remained tied with Toronto as they dropped a 2-1 decision at Oakland. Jake Smolinski singled and scored the deciding run in the third inning, rookie Zach Neal earned his first career win as a starter.

— In a 15-inning marathon, Seattle rallied past Detroit 6-5. After the Tigers' Victor Martinez homered leading off the 15th, Seattle scored twice in the bottom of the 15th to win it. Mike Zunino drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.

— Pittsburgh downed San Diego 6-4. Gregory Polanco hit a tiebreaking three-run homer. Chad Kuhl pitched six innings for the win after being called up from the minors.

— Cincinnati topped St. Louis 7-4. Adam Duvall drove in two runs and Tyler Holt's double drove in the game-winning run in the eighth.

— The Chicago White Sox erupted with three runs in the 10th inning on a Todd Frazier home run to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5. Justin Morneau had four hits for the White Sox.

— Atlanta shaded Milwaukee 2-1. Tyrell Jenkins pitched six strong innings to even his mark at 2-2. Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY'-kihs) and Adonis Garcia drove in a run each in the seventh.

— Houston topped Minnesota 7-5. Carlos Correa homered and drove in four runs. Jose Altuve (al-TOO'-vay) had four hits for the Astros.

— Adrian Beltre (BEHL'-tray) hit a two-run double, Elvis Andrus added a tiebreaking single and the Texas Rangers scored four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 at Coors Field. The AL West leaders had five hits in their big inning and swept Colorado in the brief two-game series.

AP source: Fielder done playing after 2nd neck surgery

UNDATED (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the medical decision says Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder will have to quit playing baseball after his second neck surgery.

That person told The Associated Press that Fielder isn't formally retiring, but that doctors won't give him medical clearance to play. That person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because there was no official announcement from the Rangers or Fielder about his future.

Fielder had a cervical fusion on July 29 to repair a herniation between two discs in his neck. That was done just above the area where the 32-year-old Fielder had a similar surgery in May 2014, just 26 months earlier.

Miami closer on DL...Cards Wacha sidelined

UNDAYED (AP) — The Miami Marlins have placed All-Star closer A.J. Ramos on the 15-day disabled list with a right finger fracture.

The move was retroactive to Aug. 6. Ramos, who has 32 saves in 34 opportunities, would be eligible to return on Aug. 21.

In other baseball news:

— The St. Louis Cardinals have placed Michael Wacha (WAH'-kuh) on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation, a day after his latest start. The Cards purchased the contract of top prospect Alex Reyes (RAY'-uhs) from Triple-A Memphis. Reyes will pitch out of the bullpen.

— Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley has symptoms consistent with chronic biceps tendinitis. Brantley has been on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation since May 10. He has appeared in only 11 games this season.

— Two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum (LIHN'-sih-kuhm) has accepted a demotion to the Los Angeles Angels' Triple-A team. The Angels say Lincecum plans to report to Salt Lake City this week, where he will be a starter.

No Langford for a month

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — Defensive end Kendall Langford of the Colts will miss three to four weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee. Coach Chuck Pagano said Langford, who hurt his knee in practice last week, was sent back to Indianapolis from training camp for an MRI and doctors found a congenital defect. Pagano says he remains hopeful that Langford will be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener against Detroit.

Fans who missed game plan to sue NFL

UNDATED (AP) — Several fans who traveled to Canton, Ohio, for the Hall of Fame game that was canceled on Sunday night because of poor field conditions are planning to sue the NFL and the Hall. Attorney Michael Avenatti, who represented ticket holders for the 2011 Super Bowl who wound up without seats in Dallas, tells The Associated Press that no fewer than 20 individuals have approached him about a class-action lawsuit.

New deal for TCU's Patterson

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU football coach Gary Patterson has a new contract to coach the team. He has signed a one-year extension that takes his contract through the 2021 season. Patterson is going into his 16th season as head coach of the Horned Frogs, and is the program's winningest coach with 143 victories. Over the past two seasons, TCU is 23-3 with a 15-3 record in Big 12 games.

Former college coach passes away

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Former North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest football coach Bill Dooley has died at the age of 82. His wife, Marie, says Dooley died of natural causes at their home in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Dooley went a combined 162-125-5 in 26 seasons as a head coach with the Tar Heels, Hokies and Demon Deacons and took them to a combined 10 bowl games.

Dooley was the younger brother of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, and the uncle of ex-Tennessee coach and current Dallas Cowboys assistant Derek Dooley.

Former Heisman winner looking to play baseball

UNDATED (AP) — His agent says it isn't a publicity stunt. Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow (TEE'-boh) is going to give baseball a try. The former NFL first-round draft pick plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams this month. Tebow last played organized baseball in high school.

Red Sox prez pulls Ortiz replica

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox canceled a David Ortiz bobblehead promotion last night when the figurine turned out to be "racially insensitive." That's according to Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy.

The bobblehead depicts Ortiz addressing fans at Fenway Park following the Boston Marathon bombings. But Kennedy says it didn't much resemble the retiring slugger and was not fit for distribution.
