Arrieta gets no-decision as Dodgers beat Cubs

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have finally suffered a loss in a game started by Jake Arrieta.

The Cubbies had won 23 consecutive starts by Arrieta before the Los Angeles Dodgers roughed up Chicago's bullpen in Tuesday's 5-0 victory at Wrigley Field. The Dodgers rallied after Arrieta held them to two hits while striking out eight in seven scoreless innings. Clayton Richard followed and surrendered an RBI single by Adrian Gonzalez in the eighth. Corey Seager added a three-run homer in the ninth to secure the Dodgers' third win in four games.

Scott Kazmir combined with two relievers on a one-hitter, with Joe Blanton working two perfect innings for the win. Dexter Fowler singled in the third inning for the Cubs' lone hit.

Arrieta remains unbeaten since last July 25, but he was unable to become the majors' first 10-game winner of the season as the Cubs dropped to a major league-best 35-15.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Jake Peavy combined with four relievers on a one-hitter and Denard Span went 3-for-4 with a two RBIs in San Francisco's 4-0 shutout of Atlanta. Peavy worked seven innings and allowed only a single by Tyler Flowers in the fifth to help the Giants win for the 16th time in 19 games.

— Jedd Gyroko slammed a three-run homer and Matt Carpenter was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs scored as the Cardinals ripped Milwaukee 10-3. Mike Leake evened his record at 4-4 by yielding just two runs and five hits in six innings.

— Washington has a three-game winning streak after Joe Ross limited the Phillies to a run and three hits in seven innings of the Nationals' 5-1 win at Philadelphia. The Nats also got homers from Jayson Werth, Stephen Drew, Daniel Murphy and Danny Espinosa to stretch their lead in the NL East to two games over the New York Mets.

— The Mets enjoyed a 4-0 lead until Todd Frazier belted his AL-leading 16th homer and Tyler Saladino added a go-ahead, two-run blast in the Chicago White Sox's 6-4 win at New York. Brett Lawrie had two hits and an RBI to help the White Sox end a seven-game losing streak.

— Colorado tied a team record with seven homers as Charlie Blackmon hit a grand slam and a solo shot to finish with five ribbies in a 17-4 dismantling of Cincinnati. Nolan Arenado leads the National League with 16 home runs after smashing a pair of two-run shots.

— Jose Fernandez scattered three hits in seven innings to pitch Miami past Pittsburgh 3-1. The game was scoreless until the Marlins scraped together three runs in the seventh on an RBI single, a wild pitch and a groundout.

— Kansas City won for the 12th time in 15 games as Lorenzo Cain provided a two-run homer and a two-run single in a 10-5 pounding of Tampa Bay. Kendrys Morales hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs, while Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a pair of ribbies in the Royals' fifth consecutive victory.

— Mookie Betts homered three times and had five RBIs as Boston dumped Baltimore 6-2. Xander Bogaerts stretched his hitting streak to 24 games by going 1-for-5 with a seventh-inning single.

— Justin Smoak hit a game-tying homer in the fourth inning and Kevin Pillar singled home the go-ahead run in a three-run seventh that lifted Toronto past the New York Yankees 4-1. The Blue Jays won for the ninth time in 12 games and dealt the Yanks their fifth loss in seven contests.

— Bryan Holaday and Jurickson Profar homered and Ian Desmond added a two-run double as Texas whipped Cleveland 7-3. Colby Lewis is 5-0 after allowing two hits in six shutout innings.

— Seth Smith and Kyle Seager each had four RBIs while Seattle built a 16-0 lead in a 16-4 laugher against San Diego. Smith, Seager and Adam Lind all hit three-run blasts to back Hisashi Iwakuma, who carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth before giving up homers by Travis Jankowski, Matt Kemp and Hector Sanchez.

— The Angels coughed up a 9-2 lead before C.J. Cron slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to push Los Angeles past Detroit 11-9. Cron homered twice and had five RBIs, Mike Trout hit a three-run shot and Jeffry Marte added a solo shot and two RBIs.

— Oakland was a 7-4 winner against Minnesota behind Danny Valencia's two-run homer and three RBIs. Stephen Vogt had three hits, including a two-run double that gave the Athletics breathing room in the bottom of the eight.

— George Springer belted a three-run homer and had four RBIs in Houston's fourth consecutive victory, 8-5 over Arizona. Luis Valbuena added a solo shot for the Astros, who have won seven of eight since falling 11 games under .500.

Bradley taking time off

UNDATED (AP) — Jackie Bradley Jr. is off to the best start of his major league career this season. The Red Sox are about to find out how he performs as a sleep-deprived father.

The Bosox have placed Bradley on the paternity list, less than a week after his career-high hitting streak ended at 29 games. Bradley began Tuesday ranked fifth in the American League with a .331 average, 118 points higher than his lifetime mark entering the season. He's also third in the league with a .409 on-base percentage and a .601 slugging average.

The Red Sox filled his spot by recalling outfielder Rusney Castillo from Triple-A Pawtucket, and they also activated lefty Eduardo Rodriguez while sending pitcher Heath Embree to Pawtucket.

In other major league news:

— Mets third baseman David Wright received an injection as he tries to avoid a stint on the disabled list because of a herniated disk in his neck. Manager Terry Collins said the injection requires 48 hours to take effect, which would leave Wright out of the lineup until at least Friday.

— The Dodgers have designated Alex Guerrero for assignment, less than three years after giving the Cuban shortstop a four-year, $28 million contract. Guerrero was batting just .136 after hitting .233 with 11 homers in 106 games for Los Angeles last year.

— The Dodgers are bringing back 19-year-old left-hander Julio Urias from the minors to start this weekend against Atlanta. Urias will replace lefty Alex Wood, who is headed to the disabled list with elbow soreness.

— The Blue Jays have acquired bullpen help by getting Jason Grilli from Atlanta for right-handed pitching prospect Sean Ratclilffe. Grilli is 1-2 with a 5.28 ERA and two saves this season after tearing his left Achilles tendon last July.

— Rockies manager Walt Weiss says Jose Reyes will report to Triple-A Albuquerque for an injury rehabilitation assignment on Wednesday. The All Star shortstop did not participate in spring training and was suspended through May 31 after being charged with domestic violence following an altercation with his wife in Hawaii last October.

— Yankees manager Joe Girardi says infielder Dustin Ackley will undergo season-ending surgery this week for a torn labrum. Ackley was injured as he dove back into first base on a pickoff play during Sunday's win at Tampa Bay.

— Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco will start Thursday against Kansas City, ending a nearly seven-week stay on the disabled list. Carrasco went on the DL April 25 with a strained left hamstring suffered while covering first base against Detroit on April 24. He is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in four starts this season.

— The Orioles have placed backup catcher Caleb Joseph on the 15-day disabled list with a testicular injury. Joseph was struck by a foul ball in the eighth inning of Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Brady gets union backing in appeal

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The AFL-CIO has filed a friend of the court brief on behalf of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, asking the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider a decision handed down by a three-judge panel in April.

Brady was suspended four games for what the league said was a scheme to use improperly inflated footballs in the 2015 AFC Championship game. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell rejected Brady's initial appeal and gave him a four-game ban before the punishment was thrown out and later reinstated by the courts.

The AFL-CIO said in its brief that Goodell "acted arbitrarily as an employer seeking to justify his own disciplinary decision rather than as a neutral arbitrator considering an appeal."

NFL-PRO BOWL

Pro Bowl could find home in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — It looks like the NFL is moving the Pro Bowl from Honolulu to Orlando. Three people with knowledge of the negotiations have told The Associated Press that an announcement will be made Wednesday.

The game will be played at Camping World Stadium, formerly the Citrus Bowl. Orlando beat out Honolulu, Houston and Sydney for the right to host the all-star game.

New deal for the coach

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Head coach Ken Hitchcock has signed his final contract with the St. Louis Blues, saying next season will be his last behind the bench.

The 64-year-old Hitchcock will be entering his sixth season with the Blues and 20th as a head coach. The Blues are coming off their first appearance in the Western Conference finals since 2001, ending a string of three consecutive, first-round playoff exits.

Kings guard arrested on domestic violence charge

GRANITE BAY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say Sacramento Kings point guard Darren Collison has been arrested on a charge of domestic violence. The Placer County Sheriff's Office says the 28-year-old Collison was arrested after deputies responded to a report of a woman being assaulted inside a Northern California home.

The office says Collison was booked at the jail. He was freed on $55,000 bail hours after his arrest.

Authorities say he also was booked on two misdemeanor bench warrants for driving on a suspended license.

FRENCH OPEN

Rain shuts down play in Paris

PARIS (AP) — For the second straight day, play at the French Open was disrupted and eventually called off because of heavy rain. Very few matches were completed, causing an even bigger backup to the schedule.

Two of the higher women's seeds were ousted in the rain. Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was a loser to unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. And sixth seed Simona Halep was beaten by Sam Stosur.

Afterward, both Radwanska and Halep ripped tournament officials for being made to play in the rain.

In men's play, top seed Novak Djokovic was unable to complete his match with No. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut. Djokovic led 3-6, 6-4, 4-1 when play was halted. That match is slated to resume on Wednesday.

Second seed Andy Murray and No. 3 Stan Wawrinka are part of Wednesday's schedule, as are women's top seed Serena Williams and No. 4 Garbine Muguruza.

OBITS-FORMER NHL PLAYERS PASS AWAY

MacLeish and Lysiak have died

UNDATED (AP) — Two of the NHL's top players of the 1970s have passed away.

The Philadelphia Flyers say Rick MacLeish has died at age 66. The three-time All-Star was a key member of the 1970s Broad Street Bullies teams, scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal for them against Boston in 1974. He was the eighth player in NHL history to record a 50-goal season, and he scored 328 of his 349 career goals with the Flyers.

Former NHL All-Star Tom Lysiak has died of leukemia at the age of 63. The former Atlanta Flame and Chicago Blackhawk played 13 NHL seasons and was an All-Star in 1975, 1976 and 1977.

Lysiak was the second player taken in the 1973 NHL draft and finished with 292 goals and 843 points in 919 career games.
