Jays walk off in good mood

UNDATED (AP) — Ryan Goins allowed the Toronto Blue Jays to keep their 1 ½-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East.

Goins crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Jays past Cleveland 5-3. Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Kevin Pillar lifted sacrifice flies to put Toronto ahead 3-2, but the Indians forced extra innings on a ninth-inning blast by Yan Gomes.

Encarnacion went 0-for-2 with a walk, ending his 26-game hitting streak.

Gomes homered twice and Michael Brantley added a solo shot for the Indians, who ended a six-game winning streak.

In Boston, Brett Gardner smacked a solo homer and Stephen Drew delivered a two-run double as the Yankees downed the Red Sox 3-1. Michael Pineda held the Red Sox to a run and four hits while fanning seven in six innings.

Rick Porcello took the loss despite striking out a career-high 13 and holding the Yanks to one earned run and five hits in eight innings.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Pinch-hitter Logan Morrison ripped a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth to lift Seattle past Houston 7-5. Franklin Gutierrez and Mark Trumbo also went deep as the Mariners beat the Astros for just the fifth time in 15 meetings this season. Houston is 19-19 versus the rest of the AL West.

— Texas is within three games of the Astros after Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer and Elvis Andrus had two RBIs in the Rangers' 8-6 victory at San Diego. The game was tied 4-4 in the seventh until the Rangers scored three times on an RBI single by Andrus, thanks to an error by catcher Derek Norris. Andrus stole home to cap the Rangers' four-run seventh.

— Ian Kinsler hit a two-run homer and drove in three to lead Detroit's 6-5 triumph at Kansas City. Kinsler's blast gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead in the seventh and helped them win for the second time in 11 games. Justin Verlander allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings as Detroit cut the Royals' lead in the AL Central to 12 games over Minnesota.

— The Twins won for the ninth time in 11 games by scoring three times in the eighth to beat the Chicago White Sox 8-6. Miguel Sano tied the game with a solo blast in the seventh before the Twins took advantage of errors by pitcher Zach Duke and third baseman Tyler Saladino in the eighth. Brian Dozier hit a two-run double for the Twins, who blew a 4-0 lead before staying one game behind the Rangers for the final AL wild-card slot.

— The Angels were 6-2 winners at Oakland as Kole Calhoun went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBIs. Matt Shoemaker pitched Los Angeles to just its third win in 12 games. The Angels remain 3 ½ games behind Texas for the second AL wild-card berth.

— Zack Greinke won a pitcher's duel with Madison Bumgarner and the Dodgers stretched their lead in the NL West to 5 ½ games over San Francisco by nipping the Giants 2-1. Joc Pederson belted a solo homer in the seventh off Bumgarner, who had eight strikeouts while allowing two runs and eight hits in seven innings. Greinke is 15-3 with a major league-best 1.59 ERA after holding the Giants to a run and five hits over 7 1/3 innings.

— Adam Lind laced a two-run double while Milwaukee scored four times in the first inning of a 7-4 verdict over Pittsburgh. Jean Segura had two hits and three RBIs to back James Nelson, who held the Pirates to a run and four hits in seven innings. Pedro Alvarez, Aramis Ramirez and Jung-Ho Kang homered for the Bucs, who are six games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals.

— St. Louis spotted Washington a 4-0 lead before beating the Nationals 8-5 on a three-run homer by Brandon Moss in the bottom of the ninth. Jhonny Peralta started the comeback with an RBI single before the Redbirds scored runs on a bases-loaded walk, a hit batsman with the sacks filled, a throwing error by reliever Drew Storen and a double-play grounder. Ryan Zimmerman homered for the second straight night, but the Nats dropped to 18-26 since the All-Star break.

— Philadelphia had been 1-13 versus the Mets this season until Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and six RBIs in the Phillies' 14-8 rout of New York. The Mets cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-4 before Darnell Sweeney and Andres Blanco lined two-run doubles in the Phillies' eight-run sixth. Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer for the Mets, who still lead the NL East by 6 ½ games over Washington.

— The Cubs pulled out a 5-4 win over Cincinnati on rookie Kyle Schwarber's go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh. Kris Bryant was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles as the Cubs won for the second time in their last seven games. Chicago enjoys a 6 ½-game lead over the Giants for the second NL wild-card slot.

— J.P. Arencibia launched a two-run homer and had six RBIs in Tampa Bay's 11-2 pounding of Baltimore. Drew Smyly blanked the slumping Orioles on four hits while whiffing 10 in seven innings. The Birds have dropped six straight and 12 of 13 since they climbed within a half-game of the second AL wild-card berth.

— The Colorado Rockies pulled off the fourth triple play in team history but lost 6-4 to Arizona in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader. Phil Gosselin led the Diamondbacks with a three-run homer and an RBI double. Hours later, the Diamondbacks completed the sweep by scoring four times in the eighth to beat the Rockies 5-3. Aaron Hill knotted the score with a two-run double and scored on A.J. Pollock's two-run blast.

— Miami dealt Atlanta its seventh straight loss as Justin Nicolino tossed seven shutout innings and Justin Bour belted a three-run homer to lead the Marlins past the Braves 7-1. Cuban defector Hector Olivera went 0-for-4 with a strikeout for the Braves in his major league debut.

MLB-ROYALS

Royals hit by chickenpox

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City Royals All-Star pitcher Kelvin Herrera and right fielder Alex Rios have been diagnosed with chickenpox and will likely miss a couple of weeks. Both players were sent home from Tampa Bay after experiencing symptoms over the weekend. The Royals have reached out to players, coaches and their families to determine whether anyone else has had chickenpox or may be at risk.

The Royals also have activated All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon from the disabled list and welcomed new outfielder Jonny Gomes in a series of moves. Gordon has been out since July 8, when he crumpled to the warning track while chasing down a fly ball in a game against Tampa Bay. He had spent eight games rehabbing in Omaha.

Gomes was acquired late Monday in a trade with Atlanta.

Also in the majors:

— The Dodgers have reacquired outfielder Chris Heisey, getting him from the Toronto Blue Jays for a player to be named or cash considerations. Heisey started the season with the Dodgers, hitting .154 with no RBIs in 17 games before being designated for assignment on July 30. He is a .246 hitter with 50 homers and 147 RBIs in 560 games over six major league seasons.

L.A. all in on 2024 bid

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles is hoping to host the Summer Olympics for the third time.

Mayor Eric Garcetti says his city is "the world's greatest stage" as it prepares to win the 2024 Summer Olympics, calling it "a quest that Los Angeles was made for." The U.S. Olympic Committee announced that L.A. will be its bid city in an attempt to secure the Summer Games for the first time since it was in Atlanta 19 years ago. The International Olympic Committee will pick the host city in 2017.

USOC CEO Scott Blackmun announced the selection of L.A. replacing Boston, which pulled out of contention last month amid serious concerns of cost overruns and a groundswell of citizens against the proposal.

L.A. is up against Rome, Paris, Hamburg, Germany, and Budapest, Hungary, for the right to host the Games. L.A. hosted the Summer Games in 1932 and 1984.

NFL-DEFLATEGATE

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge had to deflate a rumor.

Judge Richard Berman reiterated Tuesday that he'll rule by Friday whether New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady must serve a four-game suspension. His order came out after an apparently new and bogus Twitter account with his photograph claimed he would rule Tuesday afternoon.

Berman will determine whether the NFL properly followed its collective bargaining agreement with players when it suspended Brady for his role in using underinflated footballs in the AFC championship game.

More moves by NFL teams

UNDATED (AP) — Teams continue to pare rosters in anticipation of the new NFL season. The Miami Dolphins released punter Brandon Fields, opting to go with Matt Darr, an undrafted rookie from Tennessee.

Fields made the Pro Bowl in 2013, and his career average of 46.8 yards is the fourth-highest in NFL history. He averaged 46.3 yards last season, but his net average of 38.6 ranked only 25th in the league.

In other NFL news:

— The Green Bay Packers have some good news about their injury-stricken receiving corps. Packers receiver Randall Cobb hopes to be back for the season opener on Sept. 13 against the Chicago Bears after spraining his shoulder in a preseason game last week against Philadelphia. Green Bay wideout Jared Abbrederis returned to practice after being cleared from a concussion from the first day of camp in late July.

— Chiefs coach Andy Reid says tight end Travis Kelce will miss the preseason finale Thursday night against St. Louis after spraining an ankle in practice earlier this week. Reid says Kelce would be able to play if it were the regular season.

— Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel says his ailing throwing elbow does not need surgery, telling reporters that he's had to manage elbow soreness since his freshman year in college. Manziel hasn't thrown a pass since his elbow flared up during practice Aug. 23 and has been shut down from playing in Cleveland's final two exhibition games.

Federer, Murray, Halep among Day 2 winners

NEW YORK (AP) — Second seeds Roger Federer and Simona Halep were among the first-round winners at the U.S. Open this afternoon.

Federer dropped just five games in his straight-sets victory. Halep was leading 6-2, 3-0 when Marina Erakovic retired.

Other winners on the men's side include third seed Andy Murray, fifth seed Stan Wawrinka, sixth seed Tomas Berdych and No. 12 Richard Gasquet. Eleventh seed Gilles Simon was beaten by American Donald Young, who rallied from a two-sets-to-love deficit.

Fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki advanced on the women's side, as did fifth seed Petra Kvitova, No. 9 Garbine Muguruza, No. 11 Angelique Kerber and No. 16 Sara Errani. Women's sixth seed Lucie Safarova was knocked out in straight sets.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS

Sun Belt adds school

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sun Belt Conference officials say Coastal Carolina has accepted an invitation to join the league and will move its football program up to the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision by 2018. The Conway, South Carolina, school will join the Sun Belt in all other sports beginning with the 2016-17 academic year.

During the 2017 football season, Coastal Carolina will compete in the Sun Belt but will not be eligible for a bowl until the following season, when the conference will have 12 full FBS members.

OLYMPICS

The wait is over

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — It took 11 years, but Australian cyclist Michael Rogers has his bronze medal. Rogers finished fourth in the 2004 Games in Athens but since then, Tyler Hamilton of the United States has been stripped of the gold medal for doping.

The new standings show Rogers in third and with a bronze.
