Kershaw baffles Nats to go to 11-1...Pirates make Bumgarner tough-luck loser

UNDATED (AP) — The L.A. Dodgers took full advantage of Stephen Strasburg's upper back strain which caused him to miss last night's potential ace vs. ace matchup against Clayton Kershaw.

Justin Turner homered and had an RBI single, Joc Pederson also went deep and the Dodgers downed the NL East-leading Nationals 4-1 for their fourth straight victory.

Oh, and Kershaw wasn't bad either.

The three-time NL Cy Young award winner struck out eight in seven strong innings to improve to 11-1.

Kershaw allowed a run in the seventh and the Dodgers bullpen then contributed two shutout innings. Kenley Jansen worked a one-two-three ninth to earn his 20th save this season and 169th of his career. That breaks the Dodgers franchise save record held by Eric Gagne.

Yusmeiro Petit got the start in place of the 10-0 Strasburg, who was due to face Kershaw for the first time in the aces' major league careers. Petit, who saved a game for the Nationals five days ago, went six innings, throwing 91 pitches and allowing three runs.

In other baseball:

— Jeff Locke hurled 6 2/3 scoreless innings, Erik Kratz hit his first home run since 2014 and the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked San Francisco 1-0. That ends the Giants' eight-game winning streak. That's just the Pirates' second win in 12 games. Madison Bumgarner was the tough-luck loser, falling to 8-3. He allowed just one run in eight innings. It was Bumgarner's second complete game of the season and 12th of his career.

— Mark Reynolds hit two home runs to help power the Colorado Rockies to a 5-3 victory over the Miami Marlins in a record-setting home run contest featuring eight home runs. The eight solo home runs accounted for all of the runs scored in the game, setting the Major League record. Trevor Story, Nick Hundley, and Charlie Blackmon also homered for the Rockies, who salvaged the final game of a four-game series with Miami. Marcell Ozuna hit two home runs and Giancarlo Stanton had one for the Marlins.

— Shin-Soo Choo hit a go-ahead two-run single, Ian Desmond homered halfway up the hill in center field and the Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in a makeup game matching the American League's top two teams. Texas extended its season-best winning streak to seven games, the last four being one-run decisions.

— Brandon Moss and Jhonny Peralta homered against John Lackey and the St. Louis Cardinals stopped a five-game slide by holding off the Chicago Cubs, 3-2.

— Justin Upton hit a line drive over the left-field wall in the 12th inning for his second home run of the game to give the Detroit Tigers an 8-7 victory over Seattle.

— Jose Abreu doubled home two runs off Boston closer Craig Kimbrel with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to give the Chicago White Sox to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox. Chicago had escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth. Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the eighth time in 26 games.

—Jose Altuve, Jason Castro and Carlos Correa each hit home runs to help the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-7. Doug Fister threw seven solid innings to improve to 8-3.

— Cleveland is on a roll. Francisco Lindor and Juan Uribe homered in the eighth inning and the Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4. Carlos Santana also homered for the AL Central-leading Indians, who've won four straight.

— Jake Lamb's two-run homer capped a three-run first inning and sent Arizona to a 3-1 win over Philadelphia. Winning pitcher Shelby Miller went 6 2-3 innings allowing a run on five hits to help the Diamondbacks complete a four-game sweep. The Phillies went 0-6 on their first winless homestand of six or more games since Sept. 21-27, 1964.

Cubs' center fielder on DL...Phils ink top pick

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed center fielder Dexter Fowler on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring injury.

Fowler got hurt while running out a grounder to third in the first inning of Saturday night's 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh. Fowler, who re-signed with Chicago in late February, is batting .290 in 64 games this year and was leading the NL outfield voting for the All-Star Game in the last update on Wednesday.

In other baseball:

— The Philadelphia Phillies have signed No. 1 overall draft pick Mickey Moniak. He will be introduced at a news conference on Tuesday. A high school outfielder from California, Moniak hit .476 with 12 triples, seven home runs and 46 RBIs in his senior year at La Costa Canyon High School.

Welcome home, champs!

CLEVELAND (AP) — The newly crowned NBA champion Cavaliers were welcomed back to Cleveland by thousands of cheering fans at the airport yesterday. The biggest cheer was for LeBron James who carried the Larry O'Brien championship trophy off the plane over his head.

The four-time MVP paraded the trophy around the perimeter of the parking lot so fans behind the chain-linked fences could see it.

Following Sunday night's game in Oakland the team flew to Las Vegas for an evening of partying. They arrived back in Cleveland early yesterday afternoon

The city will stage a victory parade Wednesday. It's unclear if the home of the Cavs, Quicken Loans Arena, will be available to the team as it will be the site of next month's Republican National Convention and preparations for that are under way.

Series MVP gets even on social media

CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James ended his social media blackout by throwing a knockout punch at his critics.

One day after ending Cleveland's 52-year pro sports championship drought, James, who refrains from Twitter and other message platforms during the postseason, posted a rant on Instagram aimed at those who have doubted him.

He also took a swipe at the Golden State Warriors, who became the first team to blow a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals, by wearing a blue T-shirt with "Ultimate Warrior" written on the front when the Cavs deplaned in Cleveland.

Cavs veteran retires

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cavaliers forward Richard Jefferson is going out on top. Jefferson announced his retirement from the NBA after Sunday night's championship clinching win over Golden State.

The 15-year veteran joined the Cavaliers this season and played a key role off the bench.

Jefferson was the No. 13 pick in the 2001 NBA draft. He spent his first seven seasons with New Jersey, and also played for San Antonio, Milwaukee, Utah, Golden State and Dallas.

Big numbers for final game

NEW YORK (AP) — The seventh game of the NBA Finals between Cleveland and Golden State drew the highest television rating for the NBA Finals since Michael Jordan's last championship. Cleveland's tense 93-89 win Sunday night to capture the city's first title in more than a half-century averaged a 15.7 rating and nearly 30.8 million viewers on ABC. ESPN said that both numbers are the best since Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals, when Jordan's Bulls clinched their sixth ring.

Leafs get goalie Andersen from Ducks

UNDATED (AP) — Anaheim has traded goalie Frederik Andersen to the Toronto Maple Leafs for two draft picks. The Ducks get the 30th overall pick in Friday's NHL draft and a second-round choice in 2017.

Andersen and John Gibson combined last season to win the Jennings Trophy for the NHL's lowest goals-against average.

Andersen is 77-26-12 with a 2.33 GAA and a .918 save percentage in the regular season. He also played 28 postseason games, going 17-9 with a 2.34 GAA and .916 save percentage.

Elsewhere:

— Buffalo has acquired the rights to unsigned prospect forward Jimmy Vesey from Nashville for a third round pick in Friday's draft. The 22-year old Hobey Baker award winner as the top college player in the country opted to become a free agent rather than sign with Nashville. The Predators selected him in the third round of the 2012 draft. Buffalo now has exclusive negotiating rights to sign Vesey before he becomes a free agent on Aug. 15.

— Keith Yandle was a risk the Florida Panthers believe is very much worth taking. The Panthers sent a sixth-round pick in Friday's NHL draft to the New York Rangers for the rights to the veteran defenseman, whose contract expires on July 1.

— The Pittsburgh Penguins will hoist their Stanley Cup championship banner when their open their season at home against Washington Oct. 13. The NHL regular season begins the night before with four games on the schedule.

Gauchos eliminate Miami

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Pinch-hitter Ryan Cumberland's two-run single broke a tie to lead UC Santa Barbara over No. 3 national seed Miami for a 5-3 victory in a College World Series elimination game.

The Hurricanes finished 50-14 and went 0-2 for only the second time in their 25 CWS appearances.

The night game had Oklahoma State blanking the Arizona Wildcats 1-0.

Watson says he wants to play

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — The Zika virus won't stop two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson from competing in the Olympics if he makes the U.S. team. His schedule is booked and he knows he has to be in Connecticut the week before the Olympics for the Travelers Championship, but Watson says he wants to be in Rio.

Watson and his wife, Angie, have two adopted children, but are unable to conceive. He says for that reason the virus is not an issue for him.

OLYMPICS-BOXING-IBF SANCTIONS

IBF to sanction Olympic boxers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The International Boxing Federation will punish fighters who compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics by removing them from the sanctioning body's rankings or vacating their titles.

The IBF joins the World Boxing Council in an aggressive campaign by sanctioning bodies to keep prominent pros out of the Olympics.

The International Boxing Association recently decided to allow professional boxers to attempt to qualify for Rio, but the organization's hopes for a tournament featuring big names have been unrealized to date.

Many boxers and trainers have strongly condemned the plan, seeing danger in pitting seasoned pros against amateurs.

NASCAR-WALLACE ATTACKED

Driver attacked

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR driver Mike Wallace says he and his daughter were attacked after a concert Friday night in North Carolina. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told local media three men have been arrested after the attack at the PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte.

Wallace says three of his front teeth were knocked a few inches into his mouth and he has a black eye that is causing impaired vision. He also says he had 10 stitches in his lip.
