Cards thump Cubs...Bucs win on late hit

UNDATED (AP) — Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Wrigley Field last night, but the rest of the game belonged to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Redbirds scored twice in the seventh and four more in the ninth to beat the Cubbies 6-0. Yadier Molina snapped the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly and Randal Grichuk added a two-run double as the Cards improved to a major league-best 54-28.

John Lackey scattered six hits in seven innings to help the NL Central leaders keep their six-game advantage over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates pulled out a 2-1 win over San Diego on an RBI single by Pedro Alvarez with two out in the bottom of the ninth. A.J. Burnett had to settle for a no-decision despite holding the Padres to a run and five hits in 7 2/3 innings.

The Pirates have the National League's second-best record at 48-34.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Eugenio Suarez hit a tiebreaking, solo homer in the eighth inning to push the Cincinnati Reds past the Nationals, 3-2 in Washington. Suarez also lined an RBI single and was 3-for-4 as the Reds ended a three-game skid. The Reds' bullpen contributed 3 1/3 hitless innings after Cincinnati starter Anthony Desclafini gave up two runs and five hits.

— Johnny Monell lined a two-run double in the ninth to break up a scoreless deadlock in the New York Mets' 3-0 win at San Francisco. Jon Niese gave up just three hits in eight innings as the Mets improved to 3-1 on their road trip and climbed within 3 ½ games of the NL East-leading Nationals. The Giants dropped their seventh straight despite Chris Heston, who held the Mets to three hits over 7 1/3 innings after tossing a no-hitter in his previous meeting with New York.

— Yasmani Grandal crushed a three-run homer and Jimmy Rollins singled home the tiebreaking run against his former team as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Philadelphia 10-7. Howie Kendrick was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Dodgers stretched their lead in the NL West to five games over the Giants. Ryan Howard socked a three-run homer and Freddy Galvis hit a two-run blast while the Phillies were building a 6-3 lead.

— Marwin Gonzalez and Preston Tucker hit solo homers, drove in two runs apiece and combined for seven of Houston's 16 hits in a 9-4 rout of Cleveland. Tucker finished with four hits and Colby Rasmus delivered three hits and two RBIs in the Astros' first victory in three games. Dallas Kuechel gave up three runs in six innings for his 11th win.

— Minnesota beat Baltimore 4-2 on Brian Dozier's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th. Torii Hunter and Aaron Hicks also homered for the Twins to counter round-trippers by Manny Machado and Adam Jones. The outcome gets the Twins within four games of the AL Central-leading Royals and drops the Orioles 1 ½ games behind the AL East-leading Yankees.

— Detroit clobbered Seattle 12-5 as Nick Castellanos went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and four RBIs. Victor Martinez also went 4-for-5 with a solo shot, and J.D. Martinez belted his team-high 24th home run of the season. Yoenis Cespedes  added the Tigers' final homer, and Alfredo Simon improved to 8-5 despite surrendering five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

— Melky Cabrera laced a tiebreaking, two-run double in a three-run eighth that lifted the White Sox past Toronto 4-2 in just one hour and 54 minutes, the shortest major league game in nearly four years. Chris Sale finished with six strikeouts, ending his major league record-tying string of eight starts with at least 10 K's. Sale tossed a six-hitter and was more fortunate than Mark Buehrle, who gave up four unearned runs.

— Milwaukee's eight-game winning streak is over after Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs in Atlanta's 5-3 downing of the Brewers. A.J. Pierzynski had four of the Braves' 15 hits, and Matt Wisler gave up three runs and seven hits over 5 2/3s for his third win in four decisions. Gerardo Parra smacked a solo homer for the Brewers.

— The Royals and the visiting Tampa Bay Rays were postponed with tornado warnings in the Kansas City area. The two clubs will play a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday.

MLB-ALL-STAR RESERVES/PITCHERS

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball has announced the reserves and pitchers for next week's All-Star game at Cincinnati.

Catcher Yasmani Grandal, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Joc Pederson will represent the NL West-leading Dodgers off the bench, while Giants infielders Joe Panik and Brandon Crawford have been selected as reserves. Cubs infielders Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant have been added to the NL squad, along with Rockies infielders DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado.

The rest of the NL reserves are Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock and Padres outfielder Justin Upton.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer joins an NL staff that includes Gerrit Cole, A.J. Burnett and Mark Melancon of the Pirates, along with Trevor Rosenthal and Michael Wacha of the Cardinals. Also selected are Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, reigning NL Rookie of the Year Jacob de Grom and Dodgers standout Zack Greinke. Atlanta's Shelby Miller also made the staff, as did Jonathan Papelbon of the Phillies and Milwaukee's Francisco Rodriguez.

The American League pitching staff includes Rays standouts Chris Archer and Brad Boxberger, relievers Zach Britton and Darren O'Day of the Orioles and Kansas City's Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera. Oakland's Sonny Gray, Seattle's Felix Hernandez, Detroit's David Price and Chris Sale of the White Sox were selected for the game, as were Yankees reliever Dellin Betances, Astros starter Dallas Keuchel and Twins closer Glen Perkins.

The AL reserves include Toronto catcher Russell Martin and Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista. The Tigers will send shortstop Jose Iglesias and outfielder J.D. Martinez to Cincinnati, while third baseman Manny Machado and outfielder Adam Jones will represent the Orioles. Also named as AL reserves are A's catcher Stephen Vogt, Angels first baseman Albert Pujols, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, utilityman Brock Holt of the Red Sox, Rangers designated hitter Prince Fielder and Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis.

MLB-PIRATES-MOVES

Bucs Harrison sidelined

UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman and leadoff hitter Josh Harrison has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left thumb injury.

Harrison was hitting .279 in 75 games before jamming his thumb in Sunday's win over Cleveland. He is scheduled to undergo testing to see if there is any structural damage and to determine a timetable for his return.

Also in the majors:

— Washington star Bryce Harper won't participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby because his father isn't available to pitch to him. Harper finished second in the 2013 Home Run Derby with his dad as the pitcher.

— The New York Yankees say injured outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is set to be activated before Wednesday night's game against Oakland. Ellsbury was hitting .324 with 14 steals in 37 games before he sprained his right knee on May 19 in Washington.

— The Kansas City Royals have designated reliever Jason Frasor for assignment and placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the bereavement list. Frasor was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in 26 games for the Royals' league-best bullpen.

NBA-FREE AGENTS

West leaves Pacers for Spurs

UNDATED (AP) — David West is demonstrating that he wants to win at any cost.

The veteran forward has left the Indiana Pacers' $12 million offer on the table for a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs and a better chance to win an elusive championship. West spent the last four years with the Pacers and averaged 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in 66 games last season.

He joins a Spurs club that has added All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge and retained Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green. Ginobili announced on Monday that he is returning to the Spurs for a 14th season.

In other NBA news:

— The Memphis Grizzlies have retained the services of center Marc Gasol, who averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists last season. A person with direct knowledge of the package says Gasol has accepted a five-year contract worth more than $100 million. The two-time All-Star has spent his entire seven-year NBA career with the Grizzlies, averaging 14 points and eight boards.

— A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that guard J.J Barea and the Dallas Mavericks have worked out a reported two-year contract worth $5.6 million. The Mavericks brought back Barea early last season when Minnesota bought out the remainder of the four-year deal he signed after helping Dallas win the 2011 NBA championship. He averaged 7 1/2 points and 3.4 assists in 77 games for the Mavs last season.

— According to multiple reports, guard Cory Joseph has agreed to a four-year contract with the Toronto Raptors. Joseph played in 79 games this past season with the Spurs, averaging 6.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

— A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press the Utah Jazz have verbally agreed to a free agent deal with Joe Ingles, who averaged five points in 79 games.

GOLF-McILROY INJURY

World No. 1 tears ankle ligament playing soccer

LONDON (AP) — The world's No. 1 golfer could miss the upcoming British Open because of another sport.

Rory McIlroy said he suffered a "total rupture" of a left ankle ligament and the joint capsule while playing soccer with friends. His chief spokesman said McIlroy would not know until later in the week the extent of the injury and whether he would be able to compete in the year's third major at St. Andrews.

McIlroy was the co-favorite at St. Andrews with Jordan Spieth, The 21-year-old Texan has won the Masters and U.S. Open and goes to the British Open as only the fourth player with a shot at the modern Grand Slam.

TENNIS-WIMBLEDON

Williams defeats Williams...Americans Keys and Vanderweghe advance

LONDON (AP) — Three Americans have advanced to the Wimbledon women's quarterfinals, something that hadn't happened since 2004. Top seed Serena Williams rolled into the quarters with a 6-4, 6-3 win over her sister, Venus, unseeded CoCo Vandeweghe beat No. 6 Lucie Safarova in straight sets and No. 21 Madison Keys needed three sets to reach the Elite Eight. Also advancing were Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Timea Bacsinszky and Garbine Muguruza.

Second seed Roger Federer, third seed Andy Murray and No. 4 Stan Wawrinka moved into the men's quarterfinals with straight-sets victories. They are joined in the quarters by ninth seed Marin Cilic, 12th seed Gilles Simon, No. 21 Richard Gasquet and unseeded Vasek Pospisil.

Top seed Novak Djokovic split four sets with Kevin Anderson when their fourth-round match was suspended.

NFL-GIANTS-PIERRE-PAUL

AP source: Giants aware of fireworks injury

NEW YORK (AP) — A person with knowledge of the incident tells The Associated Press that the Giants are aware of an incident involving Jason Pierre-Paul and fireworks, but the team is unsure about the severity of any injuries to the star defensive end.

The team said in a statement that its first concern is for Pierre-Paul's well-being.

Pierre-Paul was to play 2015 on the $14.8 million franchise tag. But the two-time Pro Bowl pick has yet to sign the tender.

NHL-PLAYER MOVES

Caps ink Kuznetsov

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Capitals have given one of their budding young stars a new contract.

Center Evgeny Kuznetsov has signed a two-year, $6 million pact after scoring 11 goals and 37 points during the 2014-15 regular season. The former first-round pick added five goals and seven points in the playoffs as the Caps beat the New York Islanders before falling to the Rangers.

In other NHL moves:

— The Edmonton Oilers have acquired goaltender Anders Nilsson from the Chicago Blackhawks for forward prospect Liam Coughlin. The 25-year-old Nilsson spent last season in Russia's KHL after going 9-9 with a 3.05 goals-against average in 23 career NHL games with the New York Islanders.

TOUR DE FRANCE

Leader crashes

HUY, Belgium (AP) — Tour de France leader Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland was involved in a massive crash about 37 miles from the finish of the third stage.

The crash brought down about 20 riders when Frenchman William Bonnet slid on the side of the road. Cancellara was able to get back on his bike and returned to the race.

Spanish veteran Joaquim Rodriguez won the crash-marred third stage of the Tour de France. British rider Chris Froome finished second to take the race leader's yellow jersey.
