NCAA TOURNAMENT

Spartans and Blue Devils head to Sweet 16

UNDATED (AP) — Second seeds Virginia and Kansas have been bounced from the NCAA tournament, both falling to No. 7 seeds.

The Cavaliers were the first to go as Travis Trice poured in 23 points to lead Michigan State to a 60-54 victory. Branden Dawson added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Spartans, who also knocked out Virginia in last year's regional semifinals.

Tom Izzo's team is in the Sweet 16 for the seventh time in eight seasons and will play Oklahoma in Syracuse on Friday.

Virginia was dispatched one day after top seed Villanova was ousted from the East Regional. It's the first time in 11 years the top two seeds from the same region have been eliminated before the Sweet 16.

Wichita State won the battle of Kansas as Tekele Cotton scored a team-high 19 points in the Shockers' 78-65 win over the Jayhawks. Fred VanVleet finished with 17 points and Evan Wessel hit four treys in adding 12 points.

Wichita trailed by eight midway through the first half before advancing to the Midwest Region semifinal against third-seeded Notre Dame in Cleveland.

In other NCAA third-round games:

— Top seed Duke has reached the semifinals of the South Region by clobbering No. 8 San Diego State 68-49. Jahlil Okafor scored 18 of his 26 points while the Blue Devils were building a 37-24 halftime lead. Fellow freshman Justise Winslow added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who shot 55 percent in setting up a regional semifinal meeting with No. 5 Utah.

— Wisconsin has a matchup with North Carolina in the Los Angeles regional semifinals after Sam Dekker scored 17 points and Frank Kaminsky chipped in 16 to lead the top-seeded Badgers past No. 8 Oregon, 72-65. Nigel Hayes contributed 12 of his 14 points in the first half, but the game was tied with 5:27 left before the Badgers pulled away.

— Kyle Wiltjer scored 13 of his 24 points while second seed Gonzaga put together a flawless first half in an 87-68 rout of Iowa in the South Region. Domantas Sabonis added 18 points to help the Bulldogs advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in six years. Gonzaga's next game is against No. 11 UCLA.

— Third-seeded Oklahoma ended Dayton's run by downing the No. 11 Flyers 72-66. Jordan Woodard had 16 points and Buddy Hield finished with 15 to help Sooners coach Lon Kruger become the second coach to take four schools to the regional semifinals.

— Louisville will make its fourth straight appearance in the Sweet 16 after Terry Rozier scored 25 points in the No. 4 Cardinals' 66-53 win over fifth-seeded Northern Iowa. Montrezl Harrell's 14-point performance included a couple of game-sealing alley-oop jams on passes from Rozier.

— Devin Williams contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds to West Virginia's 69-59 win against No. 4 Maryland. Gary Browne had 14 points for the fifth-seeded Mountaineers, who have a showdown against top-ranked Kentucky in the Midwest Region semifinals.

LeBron, J.R. lead Cavs...Spurs win third straight...Another triple-double for Westbrook

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers have a 3 ½-game lead over Chicago in the NBA's Central Division following the Cavs' 27th victory in their last 33 games.

LeBron James scored 28 points on 10 of 17 shooting and had 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers thumped Milwaukee 108-90. J.R. Smith added 23 points for Cleveland, including three straight 3-pointers during a run that turned a six-point deficit into a 93-78 lead with 6:19 remaining. Smith was 7 of 9 from 3-point range to fuel the Cavaliers' third consecutive win.

In other NBA action:

— Tiago Splitter scored a season-high 23 points and Kawhi Leonard added 20 as San Antonio cruised to an easy 114-95 rout of Atlanta. Boris Diaw scored 15 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to send the Spurs to their third straight win.

— Russell Westbrook recorded his 10th triple-double since Feb. 2, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 17 assists in Oklahoma City's 93-75 win over Miami. Enes Kantor had 27 points and 12 rebounds in the Thunder's third straight win, which gives them a three-game lead over New Orleans for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

— The Pelicans were 107-100 losers to the Clippers in Los Angeles behind Chris Paul's 23 points and 11 assists. Blake Griffin also had 23 points, J.J. Redick finished with 20 and DeAndre Jordan added 12 and 16 rebounds in the Clippers' fourth consecutive win.

— DeMar DeRozan dropped in 23 points and Toronto moved a step closer toward the Atlantic Division crown by downing New York 106-89. Tyler Hansbrough added a season-high 18 points and Jonas Valanciunas had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Raptors' third win in four games.

— Phoenix pulled out a 98-92 triumph against Dallas as Archie Goodwin sank the go-ahead 3-pointer and Markieff Morris added a critical jumper in the final 30 seconds. Eric Bledsoe had 20 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Suns.

— Rudy Gay scored 26 points as Sacramento dealt Washington its 11th loss in 13 road games, 109-86. DeMarcus Cousins added 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists to the rout despite foul trouble.

— Mo Williams scored 24 points and Charlotte halted a three-game skid by downing Minnesota 109-98. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Al Jefferson each added 18 points as the Hornets took over the final Eastern Conference playoff berth, moving a half-game ahead of Boston and Indiana.

— Andre Drummond scored 18 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as Detroit downed Boston 105-97. Reggie Jackson added 17 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in the Pistons' third victory in four games since a 10-game skid.

— Danilo Gallinari nailed six 3-pointers while scoring a career-high 40 points in Denver's 119-100 romp at Orlando. Jameer Nelson scored 13 of his 15 points during a 43-12 run over a 10-minute span of the first half which gave the Nuggets a 63-37 lead.

— And the Los Angeles Lakers beat Philadelphia 101-87 behind Jeremy Lin's season-high 29 points.

Wings down Blues...Rangers crush Ducks

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Blues were able to move back into sole possession of first place in the NHL's Central Division, but they had to settle for an overtime loss in Detroit.

Justin Abdelkader scored a power-play goal 24 seconds into overtime to give the Red Wings a 2-1 triumph over the Blues. St. Louis went ahead 1-0 on an Alexander Steen goal midway through the second period, but Erik Cole's third-period tally forced overtime before the Wings moved five points ahead of Boston for third place in the Atlantic Division.

St. Louis is now one point ahead of second-place Nashville in the division race, and with two points of West-leading Anaheim.

The Ducks were clobbered 7-2 by the New York Rangers, who now lead the Metropolitan Division by seven points and are tied with Montreal for the Eastern Conference lead. Derek Stepan scored twice and had an assist as the Rangers set a season high for goals in a game.

Cam Talbot made 32 saves as the Rangers improved to 16-2-2 in their last 20 games.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— Tampa Bay is back within two points of Atlantic Division-leading Montreal after Ondrej Palat, J.T. Brown and Slava Namestnikov each had a goal and an assist in the Lightning's third straight win, 5-3 against Boston. The game was tied 1-1 until Brown and Anton Stralman scored 15 seconds apart midway through the opening period, helping the Lightning keep the Bruins just one point ahead of Ottawa for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

— Vancouver knocked off Arizona 3-1 as Alex Edler scored the game-winner with 3:13 remaining. Yannik Weber had a goal and an assist to help the Canucks move four points ahead of Calgary for second place in the Pacific Division.

NFL-STEELERS

Steelers ink Harrison

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Linebacker James Harrison has re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 36-year-old agreed to a two-year pact after having 5 ½ sacks last season in 11 games. The five-time Pro Bowler will be entering his 13th NFL season after spending the winter training in Arizona.

Long deal for Marlins' outfielder

UNDATED (AP) — Miami Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich has signed a seven-year contract extension said to be worth $49.5 million. The Marlins have a club option for an eighth year with the 2010 first-round draft pick.

The 23-year-old Yelich won a Gold Glove and hit .284 with nine homers and 54 RBIs last season, his first full major league campaign.

In other major league news:

— Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu has returned to Los Angeles for further medical evaluation of discomfort in his left shoulder. The setback jeopardizes Ryu's chances to be ready for the start of the season, with manager Don Mattingly calling it "very unlikely."

— Texas ace Yu Darvish says he's "feeling great" after season-ending surgery on his right elbow, although the 28-year old will likely be sidelined until early 2016. An All-Star in each of his three seasons since arriving from Japan, Darvish was 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 22 starts last season. His final appearance was Aug. 9 because of elbow inflammation.

— Colorado has released right-hander Jhoulys Chacin after the former Rockies' ace struggled this spring. Chacin was 1-7 with a 5.40 ERA for the Rockies last year.

— The Kanas City Royals have optioned Brandon Finnegan to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, five months after he became the first player to play in the College World Series and the World Series. Finnegan had an 8.53 ERA in four spring training appearances.

Keseloski wins at Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — If you're going to lead a NASCAR race for just one lap, it's best to make it the final one. That's what Brad Keselowski did in winning the Sprint Cup event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Keselowski roared past Kurt Busch on the final lap, capitalizing on two late restarts to a green-white-checkered finish.

Kevin Harvick finished second to extend his remarkable streak of top-two Sprint Cup finishes to eight races dating to last season. Harvick fell just short of sweeping the three West Coast races.

Busch finished third in his second race back from a suspension.

PGA-PALMER INVITATIONAL

A win for Every

BAY HILL, Fla. (AP) — Matt Every has successfully defended his Arnold Palmer Invitational crown by sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on 18 to beat Henrik Stenson at Bay Hill.

Every came from three shots behind Sunday with a 6-under 66 for a 13-under total.

Stenson had the lead heading into the round and owned a one-shot advantage with four holes to play before missing a 20-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

It was the ninth straight tournament in which a 54-hole leader failed to win.

CHAMPIONS TOUR-TUCSON

Dawson has the lead

Marco Dawson has claimed his first Champions Tour title, capturing the Tucson Conquistadores Classic.

The 51-year-old Dawson shot a 3-under 69 to finish at 13-under 203 in the first-year event at Tucson National. He had been winless in his first 20 starts on the Tour and never came away with a victory in 412 PGA starts.

Bart Bryant had a 70 to finish second for the second straight event.

LPGA-JTBC FOUNDERS CUP

Kim leads through 54

PHOENIX (AP) — Hyo Joo Kim birdied five of the last eight holes beat Stacy Lewis in the JTBC Founders Cup.

The 19-year-old Kim closed with a 5-under 67, holing a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th to beat Lewis by three strokes for her second LPGA Tour title.

The third-ranked Lewis shot a 68.
