Cal upsets No. 11 Oregon...Hoosiers upset the Hawkeyes

UNDATED (AP) — Jabari Bird scored 16 of his season-high 24 points in the first half in leading California to an 83-63 victory over No. 11 Oregon. That ends the Ducks' six-game winning streak.

The Golden Bears never trailed and led by as much as 25 while remaining unbeaten at Haas Pavilion this season.

It's Cal's third win over a ranked team this season.

In the only other game involving a team ranked in the AP Top-25, Indiana scored an 85-78 win over fourth-ranked Iowa. Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell scored 14 points and Troy Williams added 13 for the 20-5 Hossiers, who pulled into a three-way tie atop the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are 14-0 at home.

Moustakas strikes it rich...Rivera to get spot in Monument Park

UNDATED (AP) — The World Series champion Kansas City Royals and third baseman Mike Moustakas have agreed to a $14.3 million, two-year contract that not only avoids arbitration this year but also next year. Moustakas is coming off his first All-Star appearance when he hit .284 last year with 34 doubles, 22 homers and 82 RBIs.

__ The San Diego Padres have hired Hideo Nomo as an adviser to baseball operations to help expand their presence in the Pacific Rim. Nomo was the first Japanese player to permanently move to the big leagues, leading the way for more than 50 other players to follow.

— The Yankees will dedicate a plaque for retired relief pitcher Mariano Rivera in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 14 before a game against Tampa Bay. Rivera, who retired after the 2013 season, helped New York win five World Series. He is the major league career saves leader in the regular season with 652 and postseason saves with 42.

Eaves, Ovechkin and Eberle get hat tricks

UNDATED (AP)— Dallas scored a 4-2 road win over the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. Patrick Eaves scored three of the Stars' four goals in the opening 20 minutes. It was his second career hat trick. The Stars have won five of six to move within one point of Chicago for top spot in the Western Conference.

In other hockey:

— Washington's Alex Ovechkin notched his 14th career hat trick with three goals in the second period of the Capitals' 4-3 win over Minnesota. Ovechkin leads the NHL with 34 goals, including 13 in his past 13 games.

__ Jordan Eberle scored three times and added an assist in the Edmonton Oilers' 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2. Rookie Connor McDavid had two goals and three assists as the Oilers end a three-game losing streak.

— There was a wild one in San Jose where Calgary beat the Sharks 6-5 in a shootout. Jiri Hudler scored the deciding goal in the shootout. The Flames built a 4-1 lead after 14 minutes, lost it but survived in the shootout.

— The New York Islanders jumped on the L.A. Kings with three goals in the opening 14 minutes in their 5-2 victory. John Tavares had a goal and one assist. Thomas Greiss stopped 28 shots in goal for the Islanders, who are 15-4-1 against Western Conference teams.

__ Boston doubled up Winnipeg 6-3. Patrice Bergeron scored twice. Brett Connolly had three assists.

— R.J. Umberger snapped a 50-game scoreless drought and Wayne Simmonds got his 20th goal of the season to help the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 to end a three-game skid.

— Alexander Wennberg and Cam Atkinson each scored in the shootout the Columbus Blue Jackets scored a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

— Jarome Iginla had two goals and an assist, Blake Comeau had a goal and an assist and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3 to end a four-game losing streak.

Bucks clamp down on Wizards

UNDATED (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks held Washington without a field goal for seven and a-half minutes in the second quarter and beat the Wizards 99-92. The Wizards had won their previous three meetings against the Bucks.

Khris Middleton led the Bucks with 27 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five steals. Bradley Beal was high for Washington with 19.

In the only other NBA game heading into the All-Star break:

__Oklahoma City walloped New Orleans 121-95. Russell Westbrook nearly had a triple double with 23 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. The Thunder have won 9 of 11 and have the third-best record in the NBA at 40-14.

NBA-HORNETS-KIDD-GILCHRIST

Kidd-Gilchrist re-tears shoulder

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has torn the labrum in his right shoulder for a second time, possibly ending his season. The injury came in Wednesday's win at Indiana.

The team says Kidd-Gilchrist will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break and gave no prognosis for his return.

Kidd-Gilchrist first tore his labrum in his shoulder in early October and was out four months recovering from surgery.

He returned last month and was averaging 12.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 29.3 minutes per game in seven contests since returning to action.

NBA-HEAT-WHITESIDE-SUSPENDED

Heat's Whiteside suspended

NEW YORK (AP) — Miami center Hassan Whiteside has been suspended one game without pay for his elbow to the head of San Antonio center Boban Marjanovic in a game Wednesday night.

Whiteside swung his right elbow after a free throw, smacking Marajonovic on the side of the face and knocking him backward.

Whiteside will serve his suspension Feb. 19 when Miami plays the Hawks in Atlanta.

LeBron donates uniforms to Toronto schools

CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James has said "thanks" to Toronto for hosting this weekend's All-Star game in a big way.

The Cavaliers forward has surprised school kids in the city by giving them new team uniforms through his James' family foundation.

The new uniforms go to a number of schools for 23 teams in a variety of sports.

James also brought student "ambassadors" from Ohio to assist in the giveaway and to volunteer for a day at Variety Village, an organization in Toronto providing programs to help disabled youngsters. The 23 Ohio students had never been out of the United States.

PGA-AT&T PEBBLE BEACH PRO-AM

Reavie sets the pace

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Chez Reavie is off to a fast start at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He went 7-under over the closing nine holes to finish up an 8-under 63. That's good for the first round lead.

Jordan Spieth struggled with his short game and opened with a 71 at Spyglass Hill. Jason Day also had a 71 at Spyglass, while Bubba Watson opened with a 73.

Freddie Jacobson made five birdies in a six-hole stretch at Pebble Beach for a 7-under 65. Cameron Smith and Bronson Burgoon were at 7-under 64 at Monterey Peninsula.

Justin Rose had a 66 to join J.B. Holmes with the best score at Spyglass.

Phil Mickelson shot a 4-under 68 at Spyglass.

NASCAR-RULE CHANGES

NASCAR revises green-white-checkered finish rule

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — NASCAR has announced that it is shifting to an unlimited green-white-checkered finish format when late-race cautions come out. It's establishing an "overtime line" to determine the winner.

The line will vary by track. If the race leader passes the line on the first lap under green before a caution comes out, it will be considered a valid green-white-checkered attempt. If a caution comes out before the leader passes the overtime line on the first lap under green, it will not be a valid attempt. The race continues until a valid attempt.

NASCAR previously had a limit of three tries to complete the race.

OLYMPICS-ZIKA

IOC attempts to assure athletes

LONDON (AP) — The medical director for the International Olympic Committee has told The Associated Press that "everything that can be done is being done" to combat the Zika virus in Brazil and provide safe conditions for athletes at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Dr. Richard Budgett says the IOC is "absolutely not complacent" about the mosquito-borne virus, which has been linked to birth defects.

He says there has been no consideration of postponing or canceling the Olympics, which are scheduled from Aug. 5-21.
