Road teams still perfect in MLB postseason

UNDATED (AP) —

In Kansas City, Collin McHugh worked six innings and the Houston Astros hit a pair of solo homers in a 5-2 triumph over the Royals. McHugh gave up two runs and four hits in six innings before four relievers combined to blank the Royals the rest of the way. Oliver Perez entered the game in the eighth with the potential tying run at the plate before getting Eric Hosmer to hit a foul popup for the final out.

The Astros took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI grounders by Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis. Rasmus and George Spring added solo shots after Kendrys Morales homered twice to get the Royals within 3-2.

Jose Altuve was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Astros, who face the Royals in Game 2 on Friday.

Johnny Cueto will try to even the series for Kansas City. The Astros will counter with Scott Kazmir.

Robinson Chirinos and Rougned Odor homered off David Price as the Rangers downed the Blue Jays 5-3. Chirinos put Texas ahead 4-1 with a two-run shot in the fifth inning, but the Blue Jays got within 4-3 before Odor went deep to complete the scoring.

Price lasted seven innings but was reached for five runs, five hits and two walks while pitching on 11 day's rest.

Yovani Gallardo allowed two runs and four hits in five innings to improve to 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA in four career starts against Toronto. Keone Kela, Jake Diekman and Sam Dyson finished, with Dyson getting a save.

Neither team had its starting third baseman on the field by the end of the game. The Rangers had to take out Adrian Beltre in the third with a sore lower back, two innings before Toronto's Josh Donaldson came out. Donaldson was kneed in the head while sliding in an attempt to break up a double play.

Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista had to leave the game after the eighth inning due to hamstring tightness.

Game 2 is Friday afternoon in Toronto, where Marcus Stroman will pitch for the Blue Jays against Rangers ace Cole Hamels. The Rangers have won Hamels' last 10 starts, scoring at least four runs each time.

Play in the National League Divisional series playoffs begins tomorrow with the Cardinals entertaining the Cubs, and the Dodgers hosting the Mets.

In news from the Cardinals' camp, All-Star catcher Yadier Molina is on the St. Louis roster for the NL division series against the Cubs. He'll be able to play wearing a splint to protect a strained ligament in his left thumb.

Hall of Fame broadcaster to skip playoffs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully has undergone a medical procedure that will prevent him from calling Dodgers games during the postseason.

Doctors advised Scully to skip the playoffs in order to rest up, although the team didn't specify what procedure was performed.

Scully turns 88 in November and has been behind the mike for 66 years with the Dodgers, a broadcasting record for the same big league franchise.

Johnson enjoys productive reunion in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) — Wide receiver Andre Johnson returned to Houston on Thursday and haunted his ex-teammates by helping the Indianapolis Colts extend their intradivision winning streak.

Johnson caught two touchdown passes from Matt Hasselbeck, including a two-yard grab in the fourth quarter to help the Colts beat the Texans 27-20. Johnson finished with six receptions for 77 yards as Indianapolis ran its AFC South winning streak to an NFL-record 16 games.

Johnson was cut by the Texans in March after 12 seasons with the team.

The 40-year-old Hasselbeck completed 18 of his 29 passes for 213 yards and no interceptions in his second consecutive start in place of Andrew Luck, who sat out with a shoulder injury.

The Colts have won three straight since an 0-2 start.

DeAndre Hopkins had 11 receptions for 169 yards for the 1-4 Texans.

Miami cans defensive coordinator

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle has been fired by new interim coach Dan Campbell and replaced by defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo. The moves came after the Dolphins fired head coach Joe Philbin on Monday and promoted tight ends coach Campbell.

Coyle was widely criticized for the decline of the defense since he joined the Dolphins in 2012. They gave up 317 points that season, followed by 335 and 373, and after four games they're on pace to allow 404 this season.

Former NFL coach dies

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) — Former Green Bay Packers' coach Lindy Infante has died in Florida at age 75. His wife told The Associated Press that he passed away Thursday in St. Augustine after a lengthy illness.

Infante coached the Packers from 1988 to 1991, winning Coach of the Year honors in 1989 after leading the Packers to a 10-6 record.

McDavid, Eichel hit the ice

UNDATED (AP) — A new era began in the NHL tonight with the debuts of Edmonton's Connor McDavid and Buffalo's Jack Eichel, the first and second players taken in this year's draft. Neither player could rally his team to victory.

In Buffalo, Eichel was named the game's second star after scoring the Sabres' lone goal in the third period of a 3-1 loss to Ottawa. Eichel's power-play tally came after Kyle Turris tallied in each of the first two periods to put the Senators ahead 2-0. Curtis Lazar added an empty-netter for the Senators.

McDavid played 18 minutes but was held scoreless while taking two shots in the Oilers' 3-1 loss at St. Louis. Brian Elliott stopped 23 shots and blanked Edmonton after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored on a power play late in the first period. Robby Fabbri snapped a 1-1 tie midway through the third period by beating Cam Talbot, who allowed two goals on 30 shots in his Oilers debut.

In other NHL finals:

— Minnesota trailed 4-1 before scoring four times in a 5:07 span of the third period to beat Colorado 5-4. Zach Parise completed a hat trick by scoring the tiebreaking goal on a power play with 9:46 left, 56 seconds after Thomas Vanek tied it.

— Seth Jones assisted on first-period goals by Craig Smith and Viktor Arvidsson to help Nashville nip Carolina 2-1. Pekka Rinne stopped 25 shots and blanked the Hurricanes until Eric Staal made it 2-1 with 1:40 left.

— Antti Niemi handled 35 shots and also had two assists in the Stars' 3-0 shutout of the Penguins in Dallas. Ales Hemsky provided a power-play goal and an assist, while reigning NHL scoring champ Jamie Benn scored with the man advantage in the third period.

— Alexander Burmistrov and Drew Stafford each had a goal and an assist as Winnipeg ripped the Bruins, 6-2 in Boston. David Krejci and David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins, who pulled within 3-2 early in the third period before Chris Thorburn and Nicolas Petan beat Tuukka Rask 4:34 apart.

— Tampa Bay rallied to beat Philadelphia 3-2 on Jason Garrison's goal at 2:17 of overtime. The Flyers led 2-1 until Ryan Callahan scored a power-play goal with 1:38 left in regulation and Garrison followed with his second goal of the night.

Huskies top Trojans

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern Cal is off to a 1-2 start in Pac 12 play after many considered the Trojans as favorites to win the conference.

Unranked Washington shut down quarterback Cody Kessler in a 17-12 triumph over the 17th-ranked Trojans in Los Angeles. Kessler had two interceptions while passing for just 156 yards and no touchdowns. He couldn't get USC into the end zone until Ronald Jones II's short run with 12:02 to play.

Myles Gaskin ran for 134 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown to help the Huskies beat their former head coach, Steve Sarkisian.

Both teams are 3-2 overall.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-MARYLAND-EDSALL

Edsall to coach Saturday despite reports to contrary

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland football coach Randy Edsall has received what amounts to a three-day vote of confidence.

The school issued a statement saying Edsall will coach the Terrapins at top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday. The statement comes amid reports that he will be fired.

Edsall is 22-33 in four-plus seasons at Maryland, including a 2-3 mark this season.

Bae leads an International team rally

INCHEON, South Korea (AP) — Bae Sang-moon had a dynamic debut at home in the Presidents Cup by winning his match with a 12-foot birdie putt as the International team got back into the game on Friday.

Bae is playing for the final time before he starts his mandatory military service in South Korea. His putt gave him and Korean-born Danny Lee a 1-up victory over Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.

The International team won three matches and halved another, cutting the American lead to 5.5-4.5 going into eight matches Saturday.

The halved match was the most peculiar at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea on Friday. Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson were assessed a one-hole penalty at No. 7 when Mickelson used a different model golf ball, ultimately costing the Americans the match.

LPGA-MALAYSIA

Two-way tie for the lead

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Two players share the lead after the opening round of the LPGA's event in Malaysia. Allison Lee of the U.S. and China's Xi Yu Lin each shot an opening round 6-under-65 to lead four players by a shot. Among those tied for third is Michelle Wie.

FIFA mess gets messier

ZURICH (AP) — FIFA president Sepp Blatter and presidential hopeful Michel Platini have been suspended for 90 days, plunging soccer's governing body deeper into crisis.

Blatter and Platini were suspended by the FIFA ethics committee in the wake of a Swiss criminal investigation. The decision seemingly ends Platini's bid to succeed Blatter as FIFA president in the emergency election in February.

Another presidential hopeful, Chung Mong-joon, was suspended for six years in a separate case, and FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke was banned for 90 days.
