The incident started around 12:30 Monday morning when an erratic driver was reported on Highway 14 east of Rochester. Two Olmsted County deputies spotted the SUV in Eyota and the driver took off, eventually making his way to Chatfield.

Fillmore County deputies put down a spike strip but the vehicle continued on for a few more miles until it became stuck in a pasture south of Chatfield. The driver got out and ran but was caught and is now facing multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine.

He has been identified as 51-year-old Brian Rathbun of Wykoff.

When asked why he fled, Rathbun told the officers he didn’t want to be sent back to prison. Rathbun was sentenced to 9 years in prison in 2010 for a drug conviction. His adult criminal record dates back to 1988.
