Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester Park Board has accepted a master plan for one of the city’s least known parks.

Indian Heights Park is located in the northwest part of the city, comprised of nearly 40 acres of mostly woods, brush and trails. It is situated between Assisi Heights on the west and the Zumbro River on the east.

Initial work on the plan had its origins in a controversy several years ago involving the use of mountain bikes at the park. Concerned neighbors and others convinced the board to ban biking in the park and take a long look at its future use. Much of this was driven by the growing awareness that the park included a burial site for some Native Americans dating to the 1850s. It’s been a city park since 1974.

Included in the proposed master plan are enhancements with a goal to manage the park as a “significant cultural and historical site.” There is also a recommendation to build a greater awareness of the park and generate more interest.

Details of the plan are available here (page 61).
