The holiday weekend took a sad turn Friday along the shores of Lake Elysian. A 17-year-old boy who was swimming with friends on Lake Elysian didn’t resurface after jumping in the water.

WCCO-TV reported that the 9-1-1 call came in around 4 pm, the Waseca County Sheriff's Office located the boy shortly after 5 pm in about 7 feet of water. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Assisting the sheriff’s office with the response were police departments from Janesville, Waseca, and Elysian Fire Departments, Blue Earth and LeSueur County Sheriff, North Air Care North Ambulance, and the Minnesota State Patrol.

The Minnesota DNR recently warned anyone who is around area lakes, streams, and rivers that with all the recent rain we have received, should exercise extreme caution – or stay away altogether until the water recedes.
